Ian is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Leeds and Honorary Consultant Hepatologist at the Liver Unit at St James’s University Hospital in Leeds. He did advanced clinical and research training at the Birmingham Liver Unit. His early research studied basic mechanisms in hepatitis C infection and he was awarded an MRC Clinical Research Training Fellowship. This, together with an NIHR Clinical Lectureship, gave him the independence to pursue clinical trial and applied health research evaluating the quality of evidence supporting interventions for patients with liver disease.
He now spends half of his time in the clinic, managing patients with complications of liver disease, both hepatocellular carcinoma and end-stage liver disease, including liver transplantation. In the other half of his time, his University position in Leeds is based within the Institute for Medical Research and his research is focused on the diagnosis and outcomes of patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma.
